Pam Ann will poke fun at air travel, identify the individual quirks of some of the biggest international airlines (and their stereotypes) and mix in a generous dose of camp, humor and Mad Men-era glamour. JULIET MILLS, MAXWELL CAULFIELD and JENNIFER CODY to star in benefit reading of Arthur Kopit’s 1962 play Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mama’s Hung You In the Closet And I’m Feelin’ So Sad

Real-life husband and wife actors Juliet Mills (TV’s “Passions” and “The Nanny and The Professor”, Avanti) and Maxwell Caulfield (Grease 2, The Boys Next Door) will star in a reading of Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mama’s Hung You In The Closet and I’m Feelin’ so Sad to be held in Greenwich, CT on April 26, 2013. The reading will benefit The American Heyday Theatre Company, a fledgling regional theatre based in Greenwich. Also starring is Jennifer Cody (The Princess and The Frog, Shrek) Greenwich native Doug Plaut (Tiny Tim in Christopher Durang’s Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge, the upcoming film Franny). The reading will be directed by Richard Sabellico (Gypsy, Annie, Sugar Babies).

Emmy winner Juliet Mills is best known as Tabitha on the long-running NBC day-time drama “Passions.” She received an Emmy as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Special for the mini-series “QB VII,” two Golden Globe nominations; one for her infamous portrayal as ‘Phoebe Figalilly’ in the television series “Nanny and the Professor” and one for her leading role opposite Jack Lemmon in Billy Wilder’s Avanti! Mills also received a Tony nomination for her work in Peter Shaffer’s Five Finger Exercise. She has appeared in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and She Stoops to Conquer, and has performed many times opposite her husband in the plays The Elephant Man, Dial M for Murder and George Orwell’s 1984.

 

Maxwell Caulfield is known to movie musical fans as the star of Grease 2. Best known for his portrayal of Miles Colby on the prime-time soap “Dynasty” and its spin-off “The Colbys”, he appeared on Broadway and in London as Billy Flynn in Chicago. He also appeared on Broadway in An Inspector Calls, and off-Broadway in Entertaining Mr. Sloane, Manhattan Theatre Club’s Our Leading Lady, the Public Theater’s Salonika and won a Theatre World Award for his performance in Class Enemy. He also starred in the critically acclaimed film The Boys Next Door. Additionally, he has co-starred with his wife across America in numerous plays, recorded several audio books and voiced Alistair Smythe in Stan Lee’s Spider-Man: The Animated Series.

Arthur Kopit is the author of Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma’s Hung You in the Closet and I’m Feelin’ So Sad; Indians (finalist for Pulitzer Prize); Wings (finalist for Pulitzer Prize); End of the World with Symposium to Follow; a new translation of Ibsen’s Ghosts; the book for the musicals Phantom (score by Maury Yeston), High Society, Nine; Road to Nirvana; BecauseHeCan (originally entitled Y2K); Chad Curtiss, Lost Again; and numerous one-act plays. Current projects include Discovery of America, a new play based on the journals of Cabeza de Vaca; an original musical, Lewis & Clark (score by Donald Alan Siegal); an original musical, Tom Swift and the Secrets of the Universe (score by David Yazbek); and an original film, Miami. Besides teaching playwriting at NYU, Mr. Kopit heads the Lark Theatre’s Playwrights’ Workshop and is on the council of the Dramatists Guild.

A review of Encore’s! Concert Revival of FIORELLO! at New York City Center

FIORELLO! is a show about politics, righteous indignation, ambition and love. It’s focus is the making of the dynamic and legendary Mayor of New York City Fiorello H. LaGuardia: nicknamed the “Little Flower.” The many eventful chapters in LaGuardia’s highly interesting public life are an embarrassment of riches for any writer to tackle and authors Jerome Weidman and George Abbot limit themselves to relating Fiorello’s life during the ‘teens and ‘twenties, covering his progress from a socially conscious and ambitious Manhattan lawyer to congressman and war hero, and eventually his rise to Mayor of the now corrupt and depression stricken City of New York. While Fiorello moves forward, the audience has the chance to look at both the hero and his relationship with the people around him.

Essential in telling LaGuardia’s story is a musical score that goes a long way towards fleshing out the personalities and situations involved in FIORELLO. Beautifully presented by the Encores! Orchestra as directed by Mr. Rob Berman, the songs and music by Composer Jerry Bock and Lyricist Sheldon Harnick are spirited and vivid musical guides through backroom politics, strikes, the First World War, the Jazz Age and the corruption of Mayor Jimmy Walker’s administration. Politics may be a dirty game but Messrs. Bock and Harnick also make it a wonderfully tuneful one with such treats like “Politics and Poker” and “Little Tin Box.” Outside of governmental affairs we are treated to a goodly measure of well honed songs ranging from the comic (“Marie’s Law”) to the tender (“Till Tomorrow”).

As far as the cast is concerned the gravel voiced Mr. Shuler Hensley practically walks off with the show in the part of Ben Marino. His resignation as being Republican Leader in a strongly Democratic district and his surprise at LaGuardia’s congressional victory delight the audience Even if Marino is a political flunky, Mr. Hensley makes sure he is no slouch.
Aiding and abetting Mr. Marino are the other hacks of the evening who also earn a goodly share of appreciation. Messrs. Justin Barnette, Rob Gallagher, Kevin Ligon, Steve Routman, Nathaniel Stampley and Kevin Vortmann are always marvelously present for plot machinations – both political and musical.

Adding his share of administrative flavor to the evening was former Congressional Representative Barney Frank in a one-time surprise walk on as a Senator who advises LaGuardia on his first day in Congress. Rep. Frank played his moment gamely and deserved his ovation, but seemed less self-assured as a stage Senator than he did as a real-life Congressman.

Keeping the lights on in LaGuardia’s law office are the young bright eyed gofer Niel – played with amusing “omigosh” appeal by Mr. Andrew Somanosky – and Morris, the loyal drudge who has seen it all and will be the first to tell you so. Such a character might easily become the office kvetch, but the excellent Mr. Adam Heller imbues Morris with a good-natured tolerance and feeling of quiet pride in his boss that makes him both sympathetic and likable.

More importantly is Marie, the loyal secretary, go-between and driving force in LaGuardia’s legal and political careers. Ms. Erin Dilly is ideal in the role, showing a young woman with integrity and gumption, who would go far anywhere – if she just wasn’t so stuck on her boss.

The other woman in Fiorello’s life is Thea, the Ladies Garment Workers strike leader. I must give real praise to Ms. Kate Baldwin in her ability to take Thea from friendship with Fiorello to begrudging engagement and finally to romance. She manages so much with little time and one beautiful song: “When did I fall In Love?”
A friend to both Thea and Marie is Dora who rises out of the sweatshop to find love and eventually life in a penthouse. Dora is admirably enacted by Ms. Jenn Gambatese with a winning combination of cuteness and determination that is exhibited as its best in her number “I Love a Cop.” It is very understandable why her former tormentor of strike days, the Police Officer Floyd McDuff – played with amusing bluffness by the Mr. Jeremy Bobb – finds himself in love with her.

Ms. Emily Skinner plays a brief though very memorable role as the singing star Mitzi Travers. Her rendition of “Gentleman Jimmy” was a rousing salute to the New York of the roaring ‘twenties.

The other members of the cast deserve applause as well, expertly populating the scenes and musical numbers with immigrants, shopgirls, soldiers, citizens, etc…

What about the Little Flower himself?

Fiorello H. LaGuardia is not an easy role to play and requires the actor to carry off a thespian juggling act. The title character exhibits pushiness, brashness and impatience and does not even get a major share of the songs: yet he must come across as a likeable, admirable opportunist whose presence permeates all the action even when he is not onstage. I have heard from spectators that Mr. Danny Rutigliano gave a wonderful performance as Fiorello in other performances, but sadly the night I saw him, Mr. Rutigliano did not seem up to the demands of the part. Much as I truly wanted to enjoy Mr. Rutigliano’s performance as LaGuardia, all I could see was a very eager man who wanted to be liked but who did not seem to be enjoying himself very much. Perhaps it was fatigue or an off night, but this Little Flower tended to wilt: the eager reformer being eclipsed by a nebbishy noodge. As a result of the play FIORELLO! itself weakened and exhibited flaws that a stronger, more confident performance might have hidden.

To be fair I would not put all the blame on Mr. Rutigliano for FIORELLO’s shortcomings. While many of the scenes and numbers in FIORELLO are relished by the audience, Director Gary Griffin and Mr. John Weidman who did the concert adaptation did not seem to fully grasp the difficulties that adapting a musical into a concert format would involve. Primarily the problem of adapting scenes that would have probably been performed “in one” – that is in front of a curtain, to keep the story moving while a set is changed – in a fully staged production. In the evening’s presentation, they chose to present such moments as fully as any other scene forcing pauses in the action to allow the next part to be put in place. I thought this hurt the momentum of the show dreadfully, distracting the audience and hindering actors who could not fully capitalize on the energy of the previous scene. Then too, though it might be churlish to say this about a Pulitzer Prize winning play, but the Messrs. Jerome Weidman and George Abbot seemed to rely more on the legend of LaGuardia in this show than work to show what a marvel he really was. Without a strong lead actor to drive the show, FIORELLO shows itself to be one of those shows where we have to take the word of the main character and his associates on how great he has been rather than seeing how great he is. That is not the best story telling.

Still whatever story was present, it was excellently set by Mr. John Lee Beatty’s building block scenery and Mr. Jess Goldstein’s simple costumes that commendably reflected the time frame rather than attempt to recreate the ‘teens and ‘twenties. Their look was well illuminated by Mr. Ken Billington’s lighting.

I must also praise Mr. Alex Sanchez’s delightfully varied choreography and Mr. Scott Lehrer’s sound designs that came across as carefully balanced and natural even in the top balcony where the audience is directly facing the main speaker.

For all my reservations concerning this remounting of FIORELLO! – which had been the first concert Encores! ever performed in 1994, – the Encores! series provides once more the vital reminder that even if a show has its imperfections, it doesn’t have to be flawless to make for an evening of memorable theater.

An Interview with: Greg Mullavy (in 1080p)

At the end of the interview with Kathryn Kates she introduced me to her co-star in “The Last Seder”, Greg Mullavy. We brought him over and did a short but very good interview. To my horror the audio was no good and Greg very graciously agreed to be interviewed again. I am SO happy he did. We had a wonderful time and learned a lot about this accomplished actor and teacher. Whether you know him from M*A*S*H or IRONSIDE, MARY HARTMAN, MARY HARTMAN or iCARLY, I am sure you have seen this iconic actor perform. I know you will have as good a time watching this interview as we had recording it.

New York, NY (January 3, 2013) –Original Broadway cast members and creators from  the landmark musicals GREASE, NINE and GRAND HOTEL will reunite on January 14th for “KATHI MOSS’ RAMA-LAMA-DING DONG REUNION!” a one-night-only benefit for The Actors Fund.

The event will take place at The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center, and tickets ($75 and $50) for the 7 pm performance are now on sale.

The gala three-show reunion will benefit The Actors Fund, the human services non-profit that helps everyone in entertainment and performing arts in need, crisis or transition.

The evening will honor fellow cast member and Broadway veteran Kathi Moss, who was diagnosed with the rare disease cardiac amyloidosis in 2011. Ms. Moss originated the roles of Cha-Cha Di Gregorio in GREASE, Saragina in NINE (in which she introduced the show-stopping “Be Italian”), and Mme. PeePee in GRAND HOTEL.

NEW YORK, September 7, 2012 —The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced today Ang Lee has been added to the roster of its 2012 NYFF HBO Directors Dialogues participants. FSLC also announced the selections for the 16th edition of NYFF’s Views From the Avant-Garde, the popular yearly touchstone for experimental film around the world as well as the presentation of filmmaker awards from the Kazuko Trust for the first time. In addition, NYFF announced the selections for this year’s short film programs.

Joining the lineup of the popular HBO Directors Dialogues at the New York Film Festival will be Academy-Award winner Ang Lee, the director of NYFF’s Opening Night Gala presentation LIFE OF PI. The Directors Dialogues pair a director with a journalist as they discuss the filmmaker’s career, views on their own approach to making movies as well as the current state of the art of filmmaking. Previously announced were Abbas Kiarostami (LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE), David Chase (NOT FADE AWAY) and Robert Zemeckis (FLIGHT). Lee will be joined by Todd McCarthy (NYFF Selection Committee member and Chief Film Critic, The Hollywood Reporter) in conversation on Saturday, September 29 at 2:30PM.

The selections for the New York Film Festival’s Shorts Programs were also announced with films from Canada, Denmark, Egypt, France, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland and USA represented among the 12 films. The eclectic group of films includes a controversial look at high school shootings (Milad Alami’s NOTHING CAN TOUCH ME), the “making of” soft-porn auteur Russ Meyer (Todd Rosken’s UP THE VALLEY AND BEYOND), Gérard Depardieu as a travelling salesman (Constance Meyer’s FRANK-ETIENNE TOWARD BEAUTITUDE) and a young boy believing his grandfather is actually a zombie (David Moreno’s ZOMBIE).

The 16th edition of Views from the Avant-Garde (October 5-8) once again will offer a robust slate of programming at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center including free-to-the-public screenings in its Amphitheater, as it presents four nights of singular work from the frontiers of innovative moving-image making curated by Mark McElhatten and Gavin Smith and sponsored by Film Armada.

The opening day of Views will kick off with a Special Presentation of Phil Solomon’s “EMPIRE” in a free public presentation with reception in the Elinor Bunin Film Center Amphitheater. The four-day event will conclude with a special day devoted to Avant-Garde master Peter Kubleka, including the U.S. Premiere of Martina Kudlácek;s four hour documentary FRAGMENTS OF KUBELKA and the special multiple projector piece MONUMENT FILM, a World Premiere presented by Peter Kubelka himself.

Other World Premieres will include Michael Robinson’s breakthrough near feature CIRCLE IN THE SAND, Laida Lertxundi’s THE ROOM CALLED HEAVEN. Nathaniel Dorsky‘s APRIL. In addition Jerome Hiler’s ultra rare film works are being presented in original prints in newly edited versions shown for the first time anywhere.

Another World Premiere presentation will be filmmaker, installation artist, producer and cinematographer Jeff Preiss’s STOP. The film is a unique family document, a quiet tour de force, of fleeting lyrical moments accumulating into a heartfelt chronicle of identity and gender transition. Known for his work as a director, and as a cinematographer for Bruce Weber (BROKEN NOSES, LET’S GET LOST), Rosa von Praunheim and others, Preiss has made music videos for R.E.M., Mariah Carey and shown his installation work in many major international museums. After its presentation at Views, STOP will be installed in the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art as part of the upcoming exhibition “Blues for Smoke”.

The presentation of David Gatten’s THE EXTRAVAGANT SHADOWS will also be making its World Premiere. The 3-hour piece is Gatten’s longest work to date and Gatten is currently the subject of a mid-career 14-film exhibition tour TEXTS OF LIGHT originating from the Wexner Center of The Arts. Known for his philosophical and playful 16mm films working with innovative processes of image making, and touching on history, perception, and the art of reading, Gatten has created his first digital magnum opus with THE EXTRAVAGANT SHADOWS.

Views From the Avant-Garde will also announce the inaugural presentation of two $5000 scholarships to Views filmmakers from the Kazuko Trust as part of this year’s event. The filmmakers chosen by Views curators Mark McElhatten and Gavin Smith as well as consulting curator/panelists will be announced in the upcoming weeks. This year’s other panelists for this exciting new award include Nellie Killian film programmer at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and founding director of Migrating Forms and Chris Stults, associate curator in the Film/Video department at the Wexner Center for the Arts.

Said Nora Coblence, executor of the estate of noted jewelry designer, Kazuko Oshima, “When the time came to decide where Kazuko’s funds should go, the Film Society of Lincoln Center seemed like the ideal choice. She loved film with a passion, always supported the Film Society, and was quite avant-garde in so many of her multi-artistic endeavors.”

Additional highlights include a retrospective presentation of Ferdinand Khittl’s rarely seen THE PARALLEL ROAD, as well as tributes to the late Chris Marker (the first NYFF showing of SANS SOLEIL) and Raul Ruiz (the presentation of the fabled but rarely screened THE BLIND OWL).

In addition Views is proud to once again include stellar new work by Deborah Stratman, Janie Geiser, Erin Espele, April Simmons, Mike Gibisser, Ben Russell, Shambhavi Kaul. Dani Leventhal, Fern Silva Ernie Gehr, James Benning, and many others.

Also for the first time this year, web-based film distributor Film Armada has come onboard as a sponsor for Views From the Avant-Garde. Film Armada takes an editorial approach to web-based independent film distribution, focused on building a profitable channel for vanguard cinema.

Luther Price a notorious and perennial favorite at Views from the Avant-Garde will be featured with his first one-person show, A LUTHER PRICE BESTIARY.  Each film screened is a unique art object carefully sculpted, treated, and collaged. Price was included in the 2012 Whitney Biennial where Roberta Smith of the New Times praised his work as one of the outstanding highlights of the exhibition.

The first NYFF showings of Turner prize nominee Luke Fowler, internationally known artist Camille Henrot, and the installation artist and filmmaker, cinematographer, Peter Bo Rappmund.

The presentation of Peggy Ahwesh’s new restoration super 8 to 16mm blow-ups of her infamous and widely celebrated MARTINA’S PLAYHOUSE along with rare screenings of then new restorations of the work of Joe Gibbons. Both artists will be present at the screenings.

The 17-day New York Film Festival highlights the best in world cinema, featuring top films from celebrated filmmakers as well as fresh new talent. The selection committee, chaired by Peña also includes: Melissa Anderson, Contributor, Village Voice; Scott Foundas, Associate Program Director, The Film Society of Lincoln Center; Todd McCarthy, Chief Film Critic, The Hollywood Reporter; and Amy Taubin, Contributing Editor, Film Comment and Sight and Sound.
