presents

Wednesdays, November 13 & 30 @ 8pm

RAIN PRYOR stars in this effervescent solo show, which recounts her upbringing in a biracial household (her mother was Jewish) in Beverly Hills, Calif. Ms. Pryor, who sings & portrays a range of characters (including, poignantly, her father Richard in a spot-on impression), will appear in FRIED CHICKEN & LATKES for two performances only, Wednesdays, November 13 & 20 at 8pm. The show, presented by The Inspired Word, will be performed at The Café at Broadway.

RAIN PRYOR  is an acclaimed director, actor,  stand-up comedian, educator, speaker & mother. She made her television debut in 1989, as a series regular, T.J., on the hit ABC series “Head of the Class,” a character adapted from her own monologues at the request of ABC producers during her second audition.  She starred for several years opposite Sherilyn Fenn & Lynn Redgrave, as Jackie, the lipstick lesbian drug addict on the Showtime series “Rude Awakening” & has additionally guest-starred on series such as “The Division” & “Chicago Hope.” She  appeared numerous times on Johnny Carson & Jay Leno, as well as on “The Late Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” & with Tavis Smiley. Her stage credits include the title roles in the UK tour of The Billie Holiday Story & as Ella Fitzgerald in the UK premiere of Ella, Meet Marilyn, teamed up with award-winning UK soap actress, Sally Lyndsay. She’s performed in the Los Angeles production of Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues, with Nora Dunn of “Saturday Night Live” & Charlene Tilton; Cookin’ With Gas with the Groundlings improvisation troupe; The Exonerated with Aidan Quinn & The Who’s Tommy at the La Jolla Playhouse.  Her memoir, Jokes My Father Never Taught Me: Life, Love, and Loss with Richard Pryor, will be re-released by Harper Collins in January.

What the critics say about Rain Pryor & Fried Chicken & Latkes…

Make no mistake: Rain Pryor, the star of the autobiographical solo show Fried Chicken and Latkes, is not just defined by her father, the comedian Richard Pryor. There are many dimensions to this robust, ebullient performer, all evident in this trim production, which sails by in an effervescent 70 minutes. Her show is a parade of friends, relatives & tormentors, in which she also sings — with impressive power!”
New York Times

“Funny, energetic…Pryor provides plenty of laughs, along with poignant glimpses of what it was like to be a bi-racial child. The show is capped off by Pryor ably impersonating Billie Holiday while singing ‘God Bless the Child,’ an apt song for a woman who needed to figure out who she was & ‘get her own’ identity.”

Broadway Press Agent Susan L. Schulman
will discuss her book
BACKSTAGE PASS TO BROADWAY
True Tales of a Theatre Press Agent
at Barnes & Noble’s
Upper West Side Store on
Monday, October 28th at
7 pm

Broadway press agent Susan L. Schulman will discuss her memoir, BACKSTAGE PASS TO BROADWAY True Tales of A Theatre Press Agent, at Barnes & Noble’s Upper West Side store, 2289 Broadway at 82nd Street, on Monday, October 28th at 7 PM.    Ms. Schulman has worked with some of Broadway’s most talented and creative people – sometimes behaving badly and often with astonishing grace – as they struggled to create theatre magic.  In this entertaining, dishy book, she shines the spotlight behind the show curtain, sharing true tales of her life in the theatre.   Admission is free and her talk will be followed by a Q&A and book signing.

Schulman was a New York City ‘theatre kid’ who waited outside stage doors, not for autographs, but to tell actors how they had enhanced her life.  After learning her craft from some of Broadway’s legendary press agents, she handled the publicity for many Broadway shows including DREAM, DANCIN’, SLY FOX, STATE FAIR, APPLAUSE, DEATH OF A SALESMAN, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, SCAPINO, DEATH AND THE MAIDEN and REQUIEM FOR A HEAVYWEIGHT.  She shares her adventures working with Mary Martin, George C. Scott, Lauren Bacall, Yul Brynner, Robert Redford, David Merrick, Bob Fosse, Raul Julia, Zero Mostel, Vanessa Redgrave, Henry Winkler, Lesley Ann Warren, Katharine Hepburn, Glenn Close, and many more.   Schulman has survived some spectacular theatrical train wrecks including the play that killed Zero Mostel; legendary producer David Merrick’s final hurrah, and the fading film diva who sabotaged her own return to Broadway.   Schulman also explains what a theatrical press agent does, how she does it, and how theatre promotion has changed.

Broadway’s top graphic designer, Frank Verlizzo, known as FRAVER, has designed the cover for BACKSTAGE PASS TO BROADWAY.

A new series based on Richard Skipper’s popular blog,

Richard Skipper Celebrates

(Celebrating artists and their bodies of ‘worth’)

I’m still reeling, giddy and
buoyed up, floating ….
Well it’s time to come down to earth, isn’t it.

I’m wanting to find the right words to thank Richard Skipper for hosting a surprisingly love filled evening. Richard led a conversation, in front of an appreciative audience, at the Metropolitan Room in New York City, it was like doing a Cabaret Act, only instead of singing other peoples songs, I was sharing my life stories, and telling nice tales about the great people I’ve been lucky enough to work with. It’s quite dazzling to learn, that with Richard’s guidance, people really are interested and they so respect ones past work ,and how this life takes it twists and turns. He not only surprised me with flowers and a video of film clips with a musical background from “The Billy Barnes Revue,” Richard had a pianist ready to play the song I always wish I had done in the theatre, Mr. Snow from “Carousel.” The audience joined in and it was a personal moment that I’ll never forget. So, with the biggest appreciation I can muster, thank you Richard Skipper, for a tribute that I never dreamed I deserved. So the dream came true and I felt like a million!,  I can’t wait to hear about the future tributes that Richard will bring to the Metropolitan Room. It is the perfect place for for his talent to praise other talents.  Very joyful and full of myself … with a shy bow,

Jackie Joseph-Lawrence

On July 3rd, 2013, a wonderful event occurred at the Metropolitan Room in New York City. Performer, Richard Skipper launched a celebrity interview program, which will be ongoing. His first guest was Jackie Joseph, who recounted her career, with great anecdotes and information about icons of television from the 60’s and 70’s, most notably Doris Day and Dick van Dyke. Jackie was delightful throughout and could resist performing “Mr. Snow” from “Carousel”, her favorite role. Richard Skipper, paced the interview well, encouraged interaction from the audience and the outcome was lots of fun!  He has great guests lined up for the future in this wonderful space, which lent itself beautifully to this format.  Looking forward to more, more, more!
Patti Dey

I really enjoyed Richard Skipper Celebrates…Jackie Joseph at the Metropolitan Room Wednesday Night (July 3rd, 2013). The format Richard has created is so entertaining and casual at the same time. He handled the questions and guided the night along in such a skillful manner. Ms. Joseph was the “star” of the night and he made sure she shined. Congratulations on a great new expansion in Richard’s theater and cabaret career.

Rosemary Loar

These were just three of the accolades from Richard Skipper Celebrates…Jackie Joseph July 2013. A sampling of the other accolades  follow:

What a marvelous evening Richard Skipper hosted with Jackie Joseph.  He had all of us captured from the moment he said “Good Evening”! His interview flowed and he kept the audience totally involved. He was so focused and we could see he really did his homework and totally enjoyed what he was doing!  I hope he’ll make these interviews a steady event!!
Congrats again!
Peggy Herman

Richard – I wanted to let you know that I really think you should approach a cable network to do talk show on a regular basis maybe on “1st Look New York”, or part of the new “old” TV station “MeTV” that brings back favorite old shows. I’m sorry I missed your interview with Tommy Tune but if last night is any indication of your affinity for interviewing, the next time you do one of these, you should have it videotaped and put it on your sight or  Youtube and keep it as a video  resume to pitch the idea to some network about bringing back stars under the “Whatever happened to……………” and some current ones.  You are a natural and very clever at filling in gaps in the conversation to keep it going and upbeat.  The time flew and was very interesting.  I have to be honest, I came in last night just to support you and the animals, not so much to see the interview and was pleasantly surprised at how much fun it turned out to be.  Thanks for keeping me part of your fascinating world.
Kathy Towson

A most wonderful evening with Richard Skipper celebrating Jackie Joseph!  Time spent at these interviews gives one the opportunity of seeing a glimpse into the personal side of personalities that would never have the chance to…  Thanks for a great time!

Leslie Alter

At The Metropolitan Room on July 3rd, 2013, Richard Skipper was, as always, a gracious, witty, knowledgeable host and interviewer in his interview with Jackie Joseph. Ms. Joseph was lovely, charming, natural, inspiring, uplifting, with an engaging twinkle in her eye. A magical, enlightening evening! Encore, please!!!
